Recensione : La Macchina Da Guerra Romana #01 (DVD) I bought this report in the Colosseum bookshop in Italian with English audio and subtitles. It was well worth the 14,99 Euro! The presentation starts with the earliest Romans, briefly touches upon the Etruscan episode. It explains the internal structure of the Roman legion and what made it strong. Then we hear about the constant territorial expansion and the changes under Marius. I would have wished more info on the artillery, though, and the new pilum in particular which Marius had developed. The main focus is, quite deservedly so, on Caesar and what he could do with his legions. (The first 50 minutes do not stop at the point of Caesar crossing the Rubicon for nothing.) The last third explains why the army also became dangerous to Rome itself, and possible reasons for the fall of the Empire. The historical research is fairly good, quite in contrast to "Battles B.C." from the same producer, History Channel. Alesia is explained in WAY BETTER detail than there. The occasional maps supplement the usually helpful comments. Note to Christopher Kelly: I concur with your theory that Caesar had had some pieces of good luck, like running into and taking over Cassius' fleet, but do you honestly think Pharsalus was one of them? To me, that is just brilliant strategy.
